The First-Lesson Playbook

Students decide within minutes whether a tutor is 'for them'. The first lesson isn't about covering content — it's about proving that progress with you will feel good. Here's the playbook our mentors teach every new tutor.

Minutes 0–10: lower the stakes

Start human, not academic. Two minutes of genuine conversation, then a clear map: what you'll do together in the hour and what the student will be able to do by the end. Anxiety drops when the path is visible.

Ask what the student finds hardest — and believe the answer. Their perception is your starting line, even if testing later refines it.

Minutes 10–50: one visible win

Pick a single gap and close it completely. A student who walks in confused about fractions and walks out nailing them trusts you with everything else. Resist the urge to survey the whole syllabus.

Narrate the win explicitly: 'Twenty minutes ago this was guesswork — look at you now.' Confidence is the product; the math is the proof.

Close one gap completely. A single visible win earns more trust than a syllabus survey.

Your five-point checklist

  • Open with warmth and a visible lesson map.
  • Start from the student's self-reported struggle.
  • Engineer one complete, undeniable win.
  • End with a concrete plan for lesson two.

Close by telling the parent exactly what improved and what's next. Families rebook tutors who communicate progress — the playbook makes that automatic from day one.
