AI in the Classroom: A Parent's Guide

AI can solve your child's homework in seconds — which is precisely the problem. Used well it's a tireless practice partner; used badly it hollows out learning. Here's how to tell the difference.

The golden rule: AI explains, the child decides

Healthy AI use looks like this: the student attempts the problem, then asks AI to check the working or explain step three. Unhealthy use is pasting the question and copying the answer. Same tool, opposite outcomes.

Set the rule explicitly: AI may tutor, never substitute. Work submitted must be reproducible by the child without the tool.

Three uses worth encouraging

First, instant worked examples when stuck at 9pm. Second, quizzing — AI generates endless practice questions on any topic. Third, feedback on writing: structure and clarity comments the student then applies themselves.

And one boundary: exam preparation should taper AI off. Tests measure independent skill, so the final weeks must train it.

AI may tutor, never substitute. Submitted work must be reproducible without the tool.

Your five-point checklist

  • Attempt first, ask AI second.
  • Use AI for examples, quizzes, and feedback.
  • Require the child to redo key work unaided.
  • Taper AI off during exam preparation.

Talk about AI the way you'd talk about calculators: powerful, legitimate, and no replacement for understanding. Children who learn that distinction early will out-learn everyone — with or without the tool.
